Your business can make a difference for clean water! Follow these tips to reduce stormwater pollution from parking lots, lawn care, auto shops, construction sites, and restaurants. An EPA tip sheet for each topic is provided for download.
Tips for Businesses
Parking Lots
Keep pollution out of local waterways and prevent flooding from clogged storm drains. Capture stormwater runoff from your parking lot by directing it into bioswales or rain gardens. Keep salt out of waterways by only using what you need. Clean up oil spills and fluid leaks and keep parking lots free of litter and debris.
Auto Shops
Keep oil and auto fluids out of storm drains and local waterways by cleaning up spills and using drip pans when changing oil. Store parts, materials, and liquids securely and dispose of them properly.
Restaurants
Grease, oils, and debris can clog drains and pipes and pollute our water. Properly dispose of grease and oils, avoid container overflows, and quickly clean up spills.
Lawn Care
How you care for your lawn can make a big difference for clean water. Prevent the growth of harmful algae in downstream waterways by reducing fertilizer use. Keep weeds down and encourage root growth by letting your grass grow to three inches high or more. Use a mulching mower to return nutrients and organic matter to the soil.
Construction Sites
Construction sites require special care because exposed mud and dirt can wash into storm drains and waterways. Keep sediment out of streams and rivers by maintaining an entrance pad and installing silt fences and storm drain inlet protection.
